About Sonny

Hobart’s walk-in enoteca trades in vinyl records, thoughtful pours, and handmade pasta. Regulars queue along Elizabeth Street for a stool at the communal bar—and with good reason. The room runs on the warmth of an analog hi-fi system, spinning vinyl through custom speakers that keep the sound textured without drowning out conversation. Bartenders steer guests through an ever-shifting roster of local and international bottles, matching glasses to a small, farm-driven kitchen lineup. Expect seasonal plates turned out from the tight open counter: shucked oysters, sweet tomatoes, and bowls of fresh pasta.

  • Analog Sound: Spins vinyl records through custom speakers and a valve amp, delivering warm acoustics tuned for easy bar talk.
  • Walk-Ins Only: Operates strictly on a first-come, first-served basis with no advance bookings.
  • Curated Cellar: Pours a rotating mix of local Tasmanian and global bottles guided by hands-on bar staff.
  • Seasonal Kitchen: Serves a concise, evolving menu centered on handmade pasta and seasonal produce.

Why Choose Sonny

Why guests settle in and lose track of time at Hobart's beloved walk-in wine bar.

  • Curated Vinyl & Custom Analog Sound

Music is spun purely on vinyl through custom-built local speakers and a valve amplifier, providing warm analog depth that remains effortless to converse over.

Sonny has the best sound I ever heard in a bar. Local made speakers , great vinyl selection , proper valve amp. An amazing sound you can hear and talk over with no effort

  • Focused, Seasonal Kitchen Offerings

A tight, focused food list of freshly prepared pasta and seasonal plates crafted with care to pair seamlessly with an evolving wine board.

The menu is not extensive, but every dish we tried was exceptional. We started with the “lovely” cheese plate (an apt description), followed by a divine caramelised onion toast, beautifully braised goat, and a broccoli pasta that was surprisingly complex and satisfying.

  • Effortless Linger-Worthy Atmosphere

A magnetic, cozy atmosphere and intuitive drink recommendations easily turn a brief stop into an extended, relaxed evening.

Sonny is where you go for a drink and accidentally stay for hours. The wine’s brilliant, the food’s small but mighty, and the vibe is effortlessly cool.

  • Walk-In Only Spontaneity

Operating on a no-reservations, walk-in policy gives locals and travellers the freedom to drop by spontaneously for a glass and a bite.

I also appreciated that Sonny is walk-in only (no resos)

Before you head over

Essential advice on queues, seating, and ordering before you visit

  • Arrive early to beat the queue

Sonny operates strictly on a walk-in basis with no advance bookings, often resulting in lines outside. Aim to arrive right at opening or earlier in the evening to secure seats without an extended wait.

  • Expect a compact, set menu

The kitchen serves a deliberately focused, concise menu with small plates, handmade pasta, and set platters rather than custom substitutions, so plan on ordering dishes as designed.

  • Note tight quarters and accessibility limits

The bar area is intimate and seating is compact around the communal counter, which may present mobility challenges if you need wider clearance or specific accessibility arrangements.
